Choosing the Right Power Track Size for Your Malaysian Home

Getting the power track size right is mostly a measuring job, and it is far easier before the carpenter cuts anything. Order too short and you are back to an extension cord at the end of the console. Order too long and part of the track sits behind a cabinet door doing nothing.

This guide covers what size means for a track, the standard lengths and profiles in our Malaysian range, and how to measure a wall, desk or cabinet so the order matches the space.

Power track size covers four measurements: length, width, depth and weight per metre. Our Slim tracks come in 50cm, 75cm, 100cm and 150cm, and our Pro tracks in 60cm, 80cm, 100cm and 150cm. Measure the usable run between switches, corners and partitions, mark where the power feed enters, then choose the nearest standard length that fits inside that run.

What Power Track Size Actually Means

Most people asking about power track size mean length. Length decides how much of the wall or desk the track covers, and so how far along it you can plug in.

Width and depth matter just as much once the track sits under a floating shelf, inside a TV console or along a study desk, because they decide whether it fits the carpentry at all. Weight is the fourth measure, and it matters for what the track is fixed to.

Standard Lengths and Profiles in Our Range

Our Slim range comes in 50cm, 75cm, 100cm and 150cm. The Slim surface track measures 88mm wide and 20mm deep and weighs about 1.75kg per metre. The Slim recessed track is narrower and shallower at 80mm by 17mm, and weighs about 1.4kg per metre.

Our Pro range comes in 60cm, 80cm, 100cm and 150cm. Its profile is 88mm wide and 29mm deep, and it weighs about 2.25kg per metre. The Pro is also the range that can carry multimedia ports, which the Slim cannot.

Turning Your Carpenter's Feet Into Centimetres

Renovation quotations in Malaysia still price much of the built-in work by the foot run, from TV consoles to cabinet lighting, while our tracks are sold in centimetres. One foot is 30.48cm, so a six-foot TV console is about 183cm long and a four-foot study desk about 122cm.

As a rough guide, 50cm is just over one and a half feet, 75cm about two and a half feet, 100cm about three feet three inches and 150cm just under five feet. Ask your interior designer to mark the track on the drawing in centimetres, so nobody converts twice.

How to Measure for the Right Power Track Size

Start with the usable run, not the full wall. Measure between whatever interrupts the surface: a light switch, a door frame, a corner, a cabinet partition or the legs of a console. That clear stretch is the most your track can occupy.

Next, mark where the power feed will enter. The track is connected at a point your electrician wires to, so that end has to sit where the cable can reach it without crossing a cabinet back or a window frame.

Then choose the nearest standard length that fits inside the run, rounding down rather than up. If the run is 130cm, a 100cm track fits and a 150cm one does not. Confirm the finished overall length with us before any panel is cut to suit it.

Width and Depth for Surface and Recessed Tracks

A surface track stands proud of the wall by its full depth, which is 20mm for the Slim and 29mm for the Pro. Check that drawers, sliding doors and curtain tracks will still clear it, especially under a wall cabinet.

A recessed track needs a channel prepared in the wall or panel before it is fitted, sized to the 80mm by 17mm Slim recessed profile. That work belongs in the carpentry schedule, not after it. Our comparison of surface and recessed power tracks explains which suits a finished room and which suits a renovation.

Matching Power Track Size to Each Room

A TV console usually takes the longest track, because the television, soundbar, router and set-top box spread across it. Measure the console between its end panels and the 100cm or 150cm lengths will usually be the candidates.

A study desk in a condominium bedroom is often shorter than people expect once the wall beside it is measured, and 75cm or 100cm tends to fit. A bedside table rarely needs more than 50cm. Kitchens are a case of their own, and our guide to planning a power track for kitchen counters covers the wet and dry kitchen split.

When Two Shorter Tracks Beat One Long One

If the things you plug in sit in two groups, split by a window or a cabinet partition, two shorter tracks can serve the space better than one long one. Each track needs its own connection, so plan both feed points with your electrician at the same time.

Length also moves the budget, and our power track price guide explains how track length and adaptors add up.

Weight and What the Track Is Fixed To

At about 2.25kg per metre, a 150cm Pro track weighs roughly 3.4kg, against about 2.6kg for a 150cm Slim surface track. Brick and concrete walls take that easily. Thin board, glass or a hollow partition needs the fixing agreed with your installer first.

Connecting a track to your wiring is electrical installation work, and Malaysia’s Energy Commission requires contractors and wiremen doing that work to hold a valid licence.

Confirm the Size Before the Carpentry Is Cut

If your designer is still drawing the room, talk to our design consultants with the measurements and the plan, and we can check the power track size against it before anything is ordered. Our showroom in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, is open for viewing by appointment if you would rather see the lengths side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Icon

Can I order a power track in a length that is not listed?

Yes, on our Pro range. The Pro track can be made to a customised length and colour, and we can add multimedia ports such as HDMI, USB or ethernet to the bar for extra connectivity.

How does the Slim Surface Plus compare in size with the Slim Surface?

The Slim Surface Plus measures 86mm by 19mm and weighs about 1.7kg per metre, in the same 50cm to 150cm lengths. It is sold as a track-only product, without installation included.

Which adaptors come with a track when I order it?

When you order a track, the adaptor option comes as a set of three. You can choose black or white Premium UK adaptors, or black USB Type A adaptors, and add other adaptors to the track later.

Does power track size change how safe the track is?

No. Every length and profile in our range is built with a gap smaller than 6mm and fully grounded internal components, so a 50cm bedside track carries the same protection as a 150cm console track.
